Havana, 1954 — A Different Story

In 1954, Esquire magazine sent Eve Arnold to photograph Havana—then marketed as “The Sexiest City in the World.”

But the Havana Eve encountered was far from seductive. The city was under curfew, watched over by Batista’s armed regime. Its streets were tense. Its stories, complex.

Eve’s assignment was to capture allure. But she saw something more urgent.

In one of the bars frequented by American sailors—bars that were, in truth, brothels - Eve photographed this young woman.

The caption read:
“Bar girl in the red light district, Havana, Cuba. 1954.”
It was a polite euphemism - one that fit 1950s print conventions.

But Eve’s camera didn’t hide. It revealed.

In this woman’s expression, we see the exhaustion. The isolation. The quiet dignity of someone surviving in circumstances shaped by inequality and judgement.

Eve didn’t look away. And she didn’t judge.
She made space. And in that space, something honest emerged.
