“For a year I haunted Harlem, spending practically every weekend in a bar, a church hall or a restaurant where the black women came to show their handiwork. The clothing was made either by the models themselves or by local seamstresses, partly as a protest against the white establishment Seventh Avenue "shmatte" trade. It was one forerunner of the civil rights movement.”
