Inside the work of performance

On the set of The Misfits, Eve Arnold photographed Marilyn Monroe resting while receiving a foot massage, “under the watchful eye of Paula Strasberg,” as Eve’s own caption records.

The phrase matters. Paula Strasberg was not simply present on set; she was part of the close circle around Marilyn’s acting life. Along with Lee Strasberg, she helped shape Marilyn’s serious study of performance: the long hours of preparation, script analysis, emotional memory, reading and rehearsal that sat behind the image the world thought came effortlessly.

This photograph shows Marilyn between takes, but not outside the work. Her body is being cared for, her concentration held, while Strasberg watches nearby. It is an image of rest, but also of discipline: the physical and emotional labour required of an actress trying to prove herself in one of the most demanding roles of her career.

By the time of The Misfits, Marilyn’s seriousness as an artist had become central to her life. She had studied acting intensely, read widely, and built a personal library that revealed the breadth of her intellectual curiosity: plays, novels, poetry, psychology, philosophy and books on every aspect of performance.

Eve understood that Marilyn’s image was not accidental. It was worked at, studied, inhabited and remade. Here, Eve photographs Marilyn not as a passive star being attended to, but as an actress inside the process: watched over, cared for, preparing, and still deeply engaged in her craft.
