Marilyn understood the camera

What makes the photograph remarkable is that it does not feel voyeuristic. It feels collaborative. Marilyn is aware of herself, aware of Eve and aware of the camera.

Eve later described the transformation that took place in front of her. One moment Marilyn was simply there in the washroom; the next, she seemed to gather herself into the image the world recognised. As Eve put it, “there she was. She was a movie star.”

Today, we understand more clearly how deliberate that transformation was. Marilyn studied her craft intensely: through acting training, theatre, literature and the hundreds of books she gathered around her. She was not merely performing glamour. She was shaping a character, building a public image and educating herself for the life and career she wanted.

That is why this photograph matters. Marilyn is not passively being turned into an icon. She is helping to make the image. She understands the performance, and she controls it.

Eve’s gift was to recognise that intelligence without flattening it. She shows Marilyn not merely as an object of desire, but as an active participant in her own image-making: playful, knowing, vulnerable and fully alive.
