The cost of radiance

On the set of The Misfits, Eve photographed Marilyn Monroe with Montgomery Clift in the Nevada desert: luminous, exhausted and caught inside the pressure of performance.

The discipline behind the image

On the set of The Misfits, Eve Arnold photographed Marilyn Monroe with Montgomery Clift during a scene in the Nevada desert.

The photograph is full of contradiction. The colour and use of light, drawn out by Danny Pope’s printing expertise and his close work with Eve, feel almost otherworldly. Desert heat, deep shade and the concentrated activity of the set are held in a single frame. Yet Marilyn’s face carries visible exhaustion. She seems physically present in the scene, but emotionally far away.

The Misfits was written for Monroe by Arthur Miller, at a time when their marriage was under immense strain. The role was intended to prove Marilyn’s seriousness as an actor, but the production also exposed the pressures around her: the desert heat, the demands of the part, and the burden of being judged by those who still struggled to recognise the intelligence and discipline she had worked so hard to claim.

Eve’s photograph holds all of this without forcing it. She shows Marilyn at work, not as a finished icon but as an actress inside the pressure of performance: vulnerable, disciplined, luminous and exhausted.

What makes the image so affecting is the contrast between beauty and cost. Eve allows the image to glow, but never lets the glamour soften what Marilyn is carrying.
