Marilyn at rest in Bement

In 1955, Marilyn Monroe asked Eve Arnold to join her on a trip to Bement, Illinois, where she had been invited to take part in the town’s centenary celebrations.

After the crowds, ceremonies and public attention, Eve photographed Marilyn resting: quiet, inward and momentarily released from performance.

This is one of Eve’s most tender Monroe photographs. It does not show Marilyn as myth or spectacle, but as a woman moving between public radiance and private stillness. The image carries the trust of their friendship: Marilyn allowed Eve to see moments others might have missed, or not understood.

Lynn Cullen’s novel When We Were Brilliant brings new emotional context to this kind of image, including Marilyn’s experience of endometriosis and the pain and exhaustion it could bring.

Seen with that in mind, this photograph becomes even more moving: not just a star resting between appearances, but a woman whose body, ambition and public life were constantly in negotiation.

Eve’s gift was to see that complexity without exploiting it.

Supporting Eve Arnold’s archive

Every Eve Arnold Estate print helps support the Estate’s wider mission: preserving Eve’s archive, digitising unseen material and bringing her work to new audiences.

Eve left behind a vast archive of more than 250,000 images. Much of it has yet to be digitised, catalogued or made publicly accessible. Print sales help fund the long-term care of this archive, while also supporting exhibitions, research and scholarship that keep Eve’s legacy alive.

Each purchase is not only a way to own an authorised Estate print. It also helps preserve the work still waiting to be seen.
